New video of driver successfully escaping police by jumping over Seattle’s University Bridge released

A new video has been released of the driver who jumped over the University Bridge on Sept. 17 in an attempt to escape Seattle Police Department (SPD) officers.

SPD officers initially attempted to stop the vehicle near 10th Ave E. and E. Boston Street in Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood, SPD announced, after discovering the car was stolen.

The suspect was able to flee from officers through residential streets, causing SPD to lose contact with the vehicle.

Suspect attempts to jump over the University Bridge

Officers later located the vehicle stopped in traffic on Eastlake Ave. E. near the University Bridge as it was lowering.

SPD officers closed in on the driver to conduct a high-risk stop, but the suspect turned into the oncoming traffic lanes.

“The bridge is up, I’m going to have him stuck here,” an SPD officer said.

The driver broke through a safety gate and accelerated as the vehicle attempted to jump across the partially raised bridge.

“[The driver] actually made the jump over the bridge,” an SPD officer said.

The vehicle successfully jumped over the gap and was briefly airborne. After the driver landed on the other side of the University Bridge, the suspect continued to flee northbound.

SPD officers later recovered the unoccupied vehicle near Pasadena Place E., where it had suffered severe damage from the chase.

No arrests have been made, and SPD noted the investigation is ongoing.
