Approximately 30 dogs were rescued from an “animal cruelty situation” by detectives with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.
The sheriff’s office was alerted that animals might be living in poor conditions at Pittie Project PNW, a nonprofit dog rescue shelter located in unincorporated Whatcom County.
“Upon arrival, detectives observed numerous dogs in what seemed to be extremely poor condition, living in unsanitary environments, with no apparent access to adequate food or water,” the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office stated.
Injuries and conditions visually observed by investigators included, but were not limited to: open wounds on dogs’ bodies, legs, and tails; evidence of worms in feces; matted and discolored fur consistent with prolonged exposure to feces and urine; significantly underweight, with ribs, hips, and leg bones visible; and strong foul odors throughout the living areas where the dogs were housed.
Photos of the dogs’ rescue and conditions can be seen here.
“Based on these observations, investigators obtained a search warrant to seize the animals so they could receive immediate medical care and treatment,” the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office wrote.
The investigation found that Ashley Georgia, the 38-year-old founder of Pittie Project PNW, was solely responsible for the care and welfare of the dogs housed there. Volunteers previously removed 13 dogs from the property after discovering the animals’ condition.
“All animals located on the property were safely removed and are currently receiving medical evaluation and treatment with the assistance of the Whatcom Humane Society,” the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office added.
This investigation is ongoing. Criminal charges are pending.
