‘Weight off my shoulders’: Mother relieved as suspect arrested in daughter’s 1994 murder

Marc Anthony Russ was charged Thursday with first-degree murder with sexual motivation in connection with the 1994 murder of 14-year-old Tanya Frazier in Capitol Hill.
Tanya Frazier’s mother, Theresa Frazier, is relieved authorities were able to track down a suspect more than three decades later.
“Still kind of numb, but it’s a weight off my shoulders that has been lifted, if that makes sense. But it doesn’t bring her back, but at least they have the person that did it, hopefully, well, I guess I don’t know what to say about them, but they arrested somebody,” Theresa told “The Gee and Ursula Show” on KIRO Newsradio.
Theresa didn’t immediately process the news.
“When detective Norton told me, part of me said, it wasn’t believable, I didn’t believe it that they actually caught somebody, but after so many pictures, it kind of took a little bit to sink in that, and it was like a relief,” she shared.
Theresa said her daughter was always smiling and gave great hugs.
“She was a sweet person, and she always smiled, and she hugged people a lot. She had a teacher that I still keep in contact with today, that she would always give her hugs, and that’s what the teacher remembers most about Tanya — her smile and her hugs, and all of her friends,” she shared.
Theresa said she was frustrated with law enforcement in the beginning.
“It was July 18. She was supposed to come home from her job that she had. Well, she didn’t show up. I looked for her, nobody seemed to know where she was at and that was not like her. So when I called the police and reported her missing, they kept saying that she was a runaway, and that somebody knows, probably doesn’t want to tell you. So they didn’t take it seriously until after they found the body, and then they took it, I feel, more seriously,” she explained.
When asked what justice for Tanya would look like, Theresa answered: “That he would get the death penalty, but we don’t, so life in prison, I guess.”
