On episode five of “Leaving a Legacy,” Gee Scott interviews NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, who has no plans to slow down at the age of 65.

“My life is really revving up again and I’m really enjoying all the things I’m doing. I’m on a bunch of different boards — I’m on the Board of Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation, the Board of Atlanta’s Gaming Company. I still have my foundations going and we have a couple of fundraisers coming up. I’m doing appearances and memorabilia. I’m working on an NFT deal, so I have a lot of things,” Moon said.

Not to mention broadcasting in the Super Bowl for Sky Television in the United Kingdom.

Moon assured Gee that sexual harassment allegations from December 2017 are behind him, and said they weren’t true. Even so, after 15 years, Moon stepped down from his broadcasting analyst role with the Seattle Seahawks.

“There’s a lot I miss because it’s a first-class organization, but I also understand what they had to do with me as far as me taking a leave of absence because of the allegations against me,” Moon said. “I really do miss that part of my life.”

Besides raising a son in the greater Seattle area, Moon said he’s built life-long relationships in this region, starting with his time at the University of Washington. He also used Seattle as an off-season base while playing in Canada.

Moon said he was eager to play for Don James at the UW, playing the position he wanted, and having the opportunity to turn around the university’s football program. But he said it wasn’t easy as a Black quarterback in the 1970s.

“First of all, it rained 28 straight days at one point. That was something to deal with,” he recalled. “Then the fact that we didn’t really have a good football team and we were playing one of the tougher schedules, … and we weren’t winning those games. And who usually takes the blame when you’re not winning? Either the quarterback or the coach and, in our case, it was both of us. But I was the one getting booed every time I ran out onto the field. It got to be nasty, it got to be personal. It wasn’t just booing.”

Moon said he heard names and racial slurs coming from the crowd. He said coach James was getting pressure from the media and alumni about his starting quarterback. At one point, Moon even thought about transferring.

“But my mother told me, ‘Warren, you made this commitment to go to the University of Washington for the reasons you did, and the same thing could happen to you if you go to another school just because of the color of your skin. You can’t keep transferring until everybody starts to like you, so you’re just going to have to stick it out. And hopefully you’ll get things turned around and people will love you.'”

Moon credits the friends and family who supported him during those years.
