Billionaire called out, pays off chunk of overdue bills

Aug 16, 2016, 8:51 AM | Updated: 10:13 am

It didn’t take long for a billionaire to pay off a big chunk of overdue electric bills to Seattle City Light.

The Seattle Times reports developer Martin Selig cut a $1.4 million check on Monday. It was the same day the Times reported that his firm owed $1.9 million.

Twitter battle: Why can’t state give drivers earlier warnings?

About $1 million of the owed money was more than three months overdue.

The fact that City Light extended the offer of a payment plan to a billionaire who owed nearly $2 million outraged some. The Times reported that Selig’s property firm has “a history of falling behind on electric bills.”

KIRO Radio’s Jason Rantz said that a payment plan might be right in some circumstances, but it should have been more aggressive with Selig.

The Times reported that Selig’s firm paid $506,000 on Aug. 5. It was planning to pay another $462,000 on Monday under the payment plan.

It is unclear why Selig decided to pay so much on Monday. He told the Times that the firm is now “current.”
