President Obama and the great anti-gun scam

When two terrorists murdered 14 innocent victims in San Bernadino, anti-gun Progressive activists decided to immediately make is an issue about gun control. And with the help of some in the media, the President has now co-opted the issue of terrorism to push a laundry list of domestic policies that have little to do with terrorism, and much to do with pushing an ideological anti-gun agenda.

First, Congress tried to pass legislation that would make it difficult for suspected terrorists to purchase guns. Republicans voted against this legislation, leading many to wonder why Republicans would say no. Activists used this to paint the GOP as soft on terrorism and in the pockets of the “evil” NRA.

During his Oval Office address Sunday night, the President said “Let’s not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear…” which is ironic, given he wants to use fear of guns to pass laws that would erode our Second Amendment guarantees.

This was an ideologically-driven, strategic bill meant to be used to attack Republicans.

Let’s push aside that this bill wouldn’t have prevented the San Bernadino terrorist attack. The reason this bill was a disaster is its intent was to strip away our constitutionally protected right to bear arms. It doesn’t matter if you’re against that right. Your personal position doesn’t mean a right isn’t a right (isn’t that what we tell people who want to outlaw abortion?).

Had this bill passed, if you’re on the no-fly list, you wouldn’t be allowed to purchase a gun. But, do you know how one gets on the no-fly list? There’s no transparent court action that lands you on the list; sometimes you’re on the list for just reasons (like being a suspected terrorist) and other times for unjust reasons (like a clerical issue).

If you’re a suspected terrorist, shouldn’t we be watching them anyway? And if they’re dumb enough to try to purchase guns, we can simply either make the arrest or follow them further and see if they’re working with co-conspirators on an attack (then make an even bigger arrest). And if you’re on the list due to a clerical issue &#8211 WIRED Magazine detailed how Obama officials “cried ‘terrorism’ to cover up” one of those errors &#8211 should we be willing to deny someone their Second Amendment right?

When we’re talking about our constitutionally protected rights, we shouldn’t allow fear of terrorists getting their hands on guns to be reason enough to throw away the Second Amendment. The President frequently cautions us not to react in a way ISIS would prefer us to react. Something tells me ISIS is OK with this country throwing away rights based on fear.

Only, the truth is, this isn’t about fear of terrorists for Progressive activists; it’s about fear and hatred of guns.

The President, Sunday night, didn’t use his speech to spell out a new strategy to go after ISIS (he barely defended the current strategy).

Instead, he used his speech to strategically deride Republicans for not passing an anti-gun bill that hurts Americans more than it hurts terrorists. This has been a great big anti-gun con &#8211 one the Republicans didn’t fall for.
