‘The weirdest thing’: Wenatchee swimmer describes finding boys in girls’ locker room

While an initiative is on the ballot in WA aimed at keeping men’s and women’s athletics separated, a Wenatchee high school swimmer, Sadie Sullivan, revealed her personal qualms with having boys in the girls’ locker room at school.
Sullivan rehashed her experiences as a sophomore, when she ran into boys in the girls’ locker room on multiple occasions, labeling it “the weirdest thing.”
“It was my sophomore year, and I went into the girls’ locker room and saw there were guys in there, and it was the weirdest thing. It’s not like they were using it to change or anything, they were just hanging out with their friends who were girls,” Sullivan said. “We took that and complained to our school about it, and they said that the faculty bathrooms were open for us to use, but we couldn’t use those. Ever since then, it’s just been happening again and again; nothing’s changed.”
John Curley, host of “The John Curley Show” on KIRO Newsradio, asked if the high school had been alerted to any of these incidents and if the administration or district had issued a response to the girls’ concerns.
“It was just a very odd response, like they said, ‘well, our hands are tied, and we have policies, and if it makes you uncomfortable, you can go elsewhere,'” Sullivan said. “We were like, ‘Well, we can’t really do that,’ so I don’t know, it was just a very odd response, very odd.”
When asked why the kids were in the locker room to begin with, Sullivan stated that they’re “just lounging around,” and would continue to speak out about what she believes to be wrong.
“They’re not athletes. I don’t believe they’re really doing any sports at all. It’s just pure lounging around, hanging out in the locker room as a social space,” Sullivan said. “I guess at school, you just have to look like a girl, identify as one, and that’s what gets you in [the locker room]. When it comes to my safety and other girls’ safety, I will not stop pushing back about it. I’m confident in what I believe in: that this is wrong.”
