Regal Cinemas announced that they will be closing down all 536 U.S. theaters on Thursday due to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. They say the move is a temporary one but did not give a reopening date. This comes two months after they began opening some theaters in late August.

“Another business that the government can claim credit for killing,” said KIRO Radio’s John Curley. “They will most likely have to try to end up finding somebody to come in and knock everything down and then scrape the gum off the floor.”

Even though many were open, people did not attend, and with so many movie releases getting delayed (like “No Time to Die”), there weren’t very many products to feature.

“Something like 70% of theaters across the country were open, but nobody came. So even though they were open, people didn’t think it was worth the risk,” said co-host Tom Tangney.

“People are now adjusting their movie calendars and it’s as if 2020 didn’t exist for the movie-scape, they just pushed everything off so far. So even though they were shut down and they’re now open, there’s no product to show. Movie theaters are really hit hard.”
