Washington state ranks 8th in nation for life expectancy

It may not impact your day at all, but a new study from Senior Living found that Washington state has the eighth-highest life expectancy in the country.

Residents can look forward to 80.2 blissful years on average before they kick the bucket. The top of the list is a bit of a photo finish. Hawaii came in at first with 81.3 years-old, California at 80.9, and Connecticut at 80.8.

Rounding out the states with the lowest life expectancy is mostly states to the South, including Alabama at 75.4 years-old, West Virginia at 75.3, and Mississippi at dead last with 74.7.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that life expectancy across the country has gradually declined for the past three years from 78.8 years to 78.6, the first time since 1915 to 1918 that we’ve had a consistent three-year decline, reports The Seattle Times.

While Washington has some of the lowest cases of heart disease in the country, alcohol-related liver disease rose 32.6 percent.

“If you were to have a heart attack — unless the statistics have changed since 2015 — you’re most likely to survive in Seattle or King County, because the number of people in King County that have been trained with CPR is way more than anywhere else,” said KIRO Radio’s John Curley.

Then Curley asked around the studio to see if anyone has been trained in CPR. No one had.

“So if I were to fall over,” he said indignantly, “I would be the only one that would be able to save myself. I would have to do my own chest compression.”
