Gee: Wait, what?! Woman has part of her face bitten off in downtown Seattle

There are stories that make you shake your head.

Then there are stories that make you ask: What are we becoming accustomed to?

A woman was walking in downtown Seattle in the middle of the afternoon when police said a woman, a complete stranger, threw something at her. The woman allegedly called her “the inferior race,” used a homophobic slur, spat on her, attacked her, and then bit a chunk out of her forehead. She now has permanent injuries and needs surgery.

Wait, what?!

It seems that every time something outrageous happens and our response is, “Well, that’s downtown.” That isn’t something we should accept.

I love Seattle — that’s exactly why I keep talking about it.

Downtown Seattle cannot become a place where the expectation is, “keep your head down, don’t engage anybody, watch where you’re walking and hope nothing happens.”

Help people who desperately need help, and protect people who are simply trying to walk down the street. Both things can be true at the same time.

I mean, when somebody can have a piece of their FACE bitten off at 3:45 in the afternoon, the question isn’t whether Seattle has problems. The question is, what are we prepared to do differently about them?
