‘Is this babygate?’: Spike questions motives behind Seattle mayor’s unreported childcare funds

Jan 14, 2026, 5:31 PM

While Katie Wilson campaigned on several things en route to her victory as the new mayor of Seattle, one topic stood out: a leak that Wilson’s parents were funding her childcare. Although the allegations were true, Wilson turned the issue around and campaigned on the unaffordability of childcare in the city.

Months later, a letter obtained by Seattle Red revealed the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission found more than $10,000 in payments to Wilson were sent through her campaign, rather than directly to her family or the childcare provider.

KIRO host Spike O’Neill questioned why the childcare payments were funneled through Wilson’s campaign in the first place.

“Is this babygate? What’re we calling this? Why didn’t they just give the money directly to the family for daycare? Why did it go through the campaign? What would have happened if they had given it straight to the family?” Spike asked on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

“I did some digging this morning. If someone gives you money, let’s say I give you a check, there’s a threshold there somewhere. It’s between $17,000 and $19,000, where you would have to pay a gift tax on that money,” KIRO Newsradio reporter Luke Duecy responded. “Anything that goes to a campaign, you don’t have to pay a gift tax. Again, we don’t know exactly how much money Wilson’s parents sent to her campaign, but it was enough that it exceeded the acceptable amount.”

In the letter, the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission noted Wilson refunded the full amount to her parents but was fined only $250 for the violation, which she has since paid.

“It seems to me that if they’d given just a cash gift to Katie Wilson and her husband, there would have been a bigger tax bill than the $250 fine they got from a campaign contribution,” Spike said. “Maybe they knew that going in, and as a way to save a little money, they thought, let’s not make it a gift.”
