‘I don’t like Kshama Sawant’: Gee asks ‘are we done now?’ as Sawant finishes distant third

Aug 5, 2026, 2:30 PM

KIRO hosts Gee Scott and Ursula Reutin were relieved to see Kshama Sawant, who served on the Seattle City Council for a decade, finish in third place in the primary.

Sawant, who left the Socialist Alternative Party in 2024 to form her own Revolutionary Workers Party, ran as an independent and received 8,896 votes, or 12.6%.

“I don’t like Kshama Sawant,” Gee said on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “I don’t think Kshama Sawant is a good person. Go back to her awful comments two hours after Paul Allen passed away. That angered me so much. And so whenever I see Kshama Sawant — and maybe you all have your candidates too, I’m sorry, I’m human — the fact that she’s in third place, and the thing that I said to myself is, ‘Self, is this it?'”

“The voters got it right,” Ursula responded.

“Is this it? Are we done now?” Gee asked.

“According to her, probably not,” Ursula replied.

“Is she gonna be like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees from Halloween and Friday the 13th?” Gee said. “Like every time, it’s another damn movie coming out.”

Republican challenger Doug Basler beats Kshama Sawant

Democrat incumbent Adam Smith and Republican challenger Doug Basler will advance to the November general election. Sawant finished behind Basler despite raising $645,000 compared to Basler’s $99,000.

Sawant was the first, and remains the only, member of the Socialist Alternative Party to be elected to public office. She blamed union leaders for endorsing Smith and Melissa Chaudhry and splitting the left vote, according to The Seattle Times.

“It sounds like, at least for this, she’s not going to make it to November,” Ursula said.

Harger: My primary ballot is sitting on my microwave. If a politics nerd is cramming, the August primary isn’t working

We moved primaries from September to August in 2008 to give election officials more time to process mail-in ballots. That made logistical sense. For actually getting people to vote, it's a flop.
