‘We’re really proud of that’: Pierce County executive says crime, especially violent crime, is trending down

Facing ongoing challenges in public safety and housing affordability, Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello joined “The Gee and Ursula Show” to discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening the county’s justice system and expanding access to affordable homes.

“Data shows that over the last year, crime — especially violent crime — is trending down, and we’re really proud of that,” Mello said. “It takes an entire justice system to keep our community safe. I’m so proud of the work that we’ve helped lead with our justice partners.”

Mello highlighted the recently passed Pierce County Justice Fund, a dedicated source of revenue for public safety, saying it ensures the county can properly staff sheriff deputies, prosecutors, public defenders, and courts.

Pierce County executive: ‘People can’t do much without stable housing’

Turning to housing, Mello shared progress in the county’s development pipeline, which now includes 2,900 affordable homes, up from around 1,400 last year. 

“People can’t do much if they don’t have stable, affordable housing,” Mello said. “And we’re really proud of that, and we got to keep that momentum headed in that direction.”

He highlighted efforts to streamline permitting processes to reduce construction costs and accelerate housing development.

Mello also took questions about common misconceptions of his role. He clarified that he does not control the deployment of local law enforcement but focuses on providing the resources necessary for a complete justice system.

Outside of policy, Mello gave listeners a local tip, recommending the northern entrance of Mount Rainier National Park and pizza in Wilkeson as underrated Pierce County destinations.

“We need those kinds of facilities, but we need to be incredibly thoughtful about where those are, how they’re supported, and we need to be mindful about how our community grows,” Mello said.
