Ring cancels Flock Safety deal, but Jake still uneasy: ‘Every single moment of my life is being captured’

Ring canceled its Flock Safety deal, which would have allowed agencies working with Flock to retrieve videos from Ring devices, according to the BBC. But KIRO host Jake Skorheim is still worried about the bigger surveillance picture.

“When I leave my house in the morning, just to get to work, there are three or four houses I have to drive by before I get onto a main street. I must pass six cameras, absolutely, which means that every single moment of my life is being captured on film,” Jake said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

Ring’s seemingly sweet Super Bowl ad hides something darker

Ring’s cancellation came days after a Ring Super Bowl ad sparked backlash for being “creepy.” In the ad, a family finds their lost dog through Ring’s Search Party feature, which links nearby cameras.

Jake said the ad’s sweet exterior hides something darker.

“It’s hidden behind good intentions, but it’s got a lot of bad things under the surface,” he said.

KIRO host Spike O’Neill said he initially loved the ad but now sees it differently after hearing Jake’s take.

“Kudos to you, because when we were talking about how warm and fuzzy and tear-inducing the Ring spot was in the Super Bowl, the first thing you said was surveillance state,” Spike shared.

“That’s because I’m cynical,” Jake replied. “I’m a nice cynic. I’m a nice guy, but I’m cynical of big government.”
