Seattle has two Wilsons preparing for the national spotlight right now, and no, they’re not related.

The World Cup kicks off in Seattle on June 15 — 12 days away — putting Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and her administration on full display for a global audience. Meanwhile, the other Wilson is stepping away from the gridiron. Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is finalizing a deal to join CBS Sports as an analyst on The NFL Today, sliding into the seat vacated by Matt Ryan alongside James Brown, Nate Burleson, and Bill Cowher.

Two Wilsons. Two stages. One question: which one is actually ready?

I’ll be honest, I don’t mean this to be unkind, but I think a lot of people would acknowledge that both of these individuals are naturally, genuinely awkward. Not everyone thrust into the national spotlight is immediately comfortable in their own skin. Some people own the room from day one. Others face a steeper climb. These two face a mountain ahead of them.

And yet, if I had to bet on one of them? My money’s on Russell.

The case for Mr. Unlimited

I was a massive fan of Russell Wilson during his Seahawks years. Honestly, I liked that he was a little awkward back then, because it meant his head was in the game. He wasn’t trying to be cool. And he definitely wasn’t. He was trying to win. That’s who Russell Wilson is at his core: a competitor.

Yes, the post-Seattle chapter was a slow-motion car crash. The cringeworthy Mr. Unlimited persona, the GQ covers, the $85 million in dead money from Denver, none of it was a good look. But here’s the thing about competitors: they find a way.

Put Russell Wilson in a CBS studio surrounded by producers and talent coaches all invested in making the final product look smooth, and pair that with his relentless drive for excellence? I think he’s got a real shot at being a fantastic analyst. Tom Brady was the same story. Incredible QB, not an immediate star as a football analyst … but he’s a winner. He figured out how to get great, and now he’s one of my favs.

The case against Mayor Katie Wilson

Katie Wilson is a different story. She’s facing a challenge that goes beyond camera comfort. Her short time in office has already featured some painful on-camera moments, staff resignations, and the kind of internal shuffling that rarely signals a smooth operation. And before she won the mayoral race, the résumé didn’t exactly scream “ready for primetime.”

Russell Wilson is driven by a fierce personal standard, even when he falls short of it. Russell has fire in his eyes, and Katie looks like a deer in the headlights. She may prove the skeptics wrong — but if I’m betting?
