‘It was closer than any Seahawk third down attempt last night’: Jake and Spike react to firework scare, Seahawks loss

A firework appearing to narrowly miss a military helicopter during the Seahawks’ pregame flyover gave KIRO hosts Jake Skorheim and Spike O’Neill an unsettling opening to their discussion of Seattle’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

For Spike, the apparent close call also offered a pointed comparison to the Seahawks’ offensive struggles.

“It was closer than any Seahawk third down attempt last night,” Spike said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

A Black Hawk helicopter appeared to pass through a burst of fireworks during Monday’s pregame flyover at Lumen Field.

Jake initially enjoyed the spectacle on television without noticing the moment that later drew his attention in videos circulating online.

“There was a helicopter flyover, which was awesome, and it was really cool until I saw these videos going around online,” Jake said.

A pregame spectacle takes an unsettling turn

Jake described watching footage of four helicopters passing over the stadium as fireworks launched beneath them. From one camera angle, he thought a firework nearly struck an aircraft.

Spike had also found a photograph that he believed showed the moment from another helicopter in the formation. He emphasized that he was seeking permission before sharing the image with the show’s audience.

“I’m waiting for a response to that. I won’t do it until I know we have clearance and permission to do so,” Spike said.

Although Spike estimated that the firework passed within 10 yards of an open helicopter door, that distance was his interpretation of the image, not a confirmed measurement.

Jake joked that the pregame scare might have foreshadowed the football to follow. The conversation soon shifted from the flyover to Seattle’s performance against Chicago.

Brock Huard delivers a blunt assessment

Jake played a postgame reaction from Seattle Sports Brock Huard, co-host of “Brock and Salk” on Seattle Sports, whose criticism went beyond the quarterback and offensive play-calling.

“They were violent in every phase. The Seahawks were not,” Brock said in the clip.

Brock described Seattle as struggling on third down and being physically overmatched. He also pointed out that Chicago scored touchdowns on all four of its red-zone trips.

“No answers tonight,” Brock said.

Jake said Brock’s assessment captured his frustration watching the game. Spike, meanwhile, complimented Brock for delivering such a forceful critique without profanity.

“We didn’t have to edit out a single word,” Spike said.

Jake agreed that Brock’s authority made the criticism effective without swearing.

Jake balances frustration with a parenting moment

For Jake, watching the loss meant managing both his own disappointment and his football-loving son’s reaction.

He described trying to lift his son’s spirits while struggling with the same frustration over Seattle’s performance.

“And I’m trying to lift spirits at the same time,” Jake said. “Ah, it was exhausting, and of course, he’s like, ‘This is bad. It was the whole thing was bad.’”

Between the pregame scare and the game itself, the hosts found plenty to lament — with Spike’s third-down jab summing up their mood.
