Should Sounders fan be forced to sit down?

Many Sounders fans are known for standing up during an entire game. Clearly not everyone got the memo. A video of an angry spectator trying to shout a guy into sitting down is going viral.

In the video posted on YouTube, the standing fan defends his actions, insisting it is a tradition stadium-wide.

So who’s right?

“It’s not like you’re at the movies or the opera. Because you know what? You’re going to stand up when a goal gets scored. You’re going to stand up and cheer. What about the people behind you? Everybody has some threshold at which they will stand up and cheer,” says co-host Luke Burbank.

You are dead wrong I have been a Seattle Sounders season ticket holder since 2009. According to the Sounders front-office staff, if you sit in the 200 level, especially closer to the 50-yard-line, people sit and stand only when appropriate. Score a goal, build up to a play, corner kicks…

“How do we know when a play is building,” counters Burbank. “But what if someone else’s threshold for that is just different then yours? What if they just really, really love slide tackles and someone just lays a sweet slide tackle on someone and they’re standing for that? I just think it’s weird when we start to get into who’s allowed to stand for what thing is happening on the field.”

Standing at a sports event when there is something exciting happening is one thing, but shouldn’t be overdone.
We were at the Seahawks first preseason game this year, and two rows ahead of us, after the kick-off, a couple continued to stand. She looked really uncomfortable doing so because everyone else in our section was sitting down and she kept sitting then standing when her companion urged her to her feet. He didn’t care that he was blocking the view of people behind him and was offensively rude and aggressive when my husband reached through the row in front of us to ask him to sit. He seemed to think he could stand the whole game if he liked. I didn’t really want to have to, plus I knew it would be rude to those behind us. He finally sat before someone in the section contacted security (you’re supposed to let them know if a fan is going “too far” in their enthusiasm).

You would be surprised how many of us just think sports is entertainment – something to watch without making ourselves the show. Having your view negated sucks. It’s like going to a rock concert and hearing nothing but the drunk in front of you. But apparently we have so become conditioned that rude is okay – as long as the mob signed off.

I was at a Queensryche concert a few years ago and was yelled at for standing about 30 rows from front, then at a fireworks show in Olympia, outside on the grass…and I’m only 5’4″. Its always people around 40 and 50. I’m 38, so hope I don’t become one of these people.
