97.3 KIRO FM’s Rachel Belle was surprised at how hard it was to find a dreidel for sale in Seattle.

For those unfamiliar, Belle explained what a dreidel is on 97.3 KIRO FM’s Ross and Burbank Show.

“A dreidel is a spinning top. It’s a Jewish gambling game of sorts,” says Belle. “When I was a kid, we would play with M & Ms or pennies.”

Belle had constructed a dreidel pinata and was looking for a number of inexpensive dreidels to fill it for a party. Her first stop was the Archie McPhee store in Wallingford.

“No dreidels. They only had two Star of David maracas,” says Belle.

Her next stop was Champion Party Supply and Display and Costume in Northgate. Neither store had any dreidels.

It was time to phone a friend. “I called my mother, which is what I do in most of these situations.”

“She said ‘Go to Bed, Bath and Beyond.'”

After calling the linen and housewares store, she was discouraged that the “Beyond” apparently did not include dreidels.

“They had nothing. She told me on the phone they didn’t stock a single Hanukkah item this year, as a matter of fact.”

Phone calls to Target also turned up no dreidels.

Finally, she got a recommendation from a listener.

“Just as I was about to make one out of clay,” says Belle. “I got a contact that the synagogue on Capitol Hill that they have a gift shop that has dreidels.”

Twenty dreidels cost her 30 cents each.

“I bought 20 disco-like metallic purple, silver and blue dreidels.”

“So next year you’ll go to the synagogue first won’t you?” asked Dave Ross.

“I will. I learned my lesson.”
