Housing First vs. Recovery First: Seattle's Homelessness Debate
Friday night, Charlie Harger moderated a panel discussion on homelessness and addiction put on by We Heart Seattle. On one side: political consultant Sandeep Kaushik and LEAD co-founder Lisa Daugaard, representing the Housing First approach. On the other: San Francisco recovery advocate Tom Wolf and Normandy Park Mayor Eric Zimmerman.
Before the discussion started, Charlie asked the room how many had a family member who'd lived through addiction or homelessness. Nearly every hand went up. Nobody left during the hour-long conversation, and afterward several audience members said it felt like maybe a little progress. Charlie on what happened when Seattle put both sides of the addiction fight in one room — and why the city needs more conversations like it.
