Katie Wilson: A Win, a Fake Quote, and a Delayed Press Conference
Charlie Harger was getting ready to write something he's never written before: an all-praise column about Mayor Katie Wilson. Her proposed 2027-2028 Seattle budget cuts $50 million with no major new taxes, funds SPD hiring to 1,250 officers, and closes the deficit without touching reserves.
Then two more stories broke the same day. SPD's after-action review revealed Wilson's office held up a police press conference on the night of the Bite of Seattle shooting so the mayor could be in it. And KIRO Newsradio found her office used a quote from King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion as an endorsement of a gun violence plan the prosecutor's office says it never saw. So much for the all-praise edition.
