425 Business recently conducted an email survey of several area business leaders to ask each of them for a mid-year market update from their perspectives.
Overall, the market is moving in the right direction, many said, but any easy gains have expired. Below is a summary of what was reported on several trending subjects.
Overall. The market is cautiously resilient, with many reporting revenue growth, albeit with tighter margins and more pressure on labor.Revenue and demand. Year-over-year growth is occurring, yet with reduced volumes per customer. Demand is still present, but conversion is less predictable while consumer confidence appears uneven.Pricing. Margin pressure was a central theme, as were rising wages, higher operating costs, tariff and fuel expenses, and more.Staffing and structure. Owners and operators are being conservative with staffing, with some adding seasonal workers and others reducing administrative positions either entirely and/or shrinking hours accordingly. Leaders are trying to stay lean and flexible. External pressure. Regulatory and cost pressures, such as code requirements and permitting costs, are shaping decisions in the building sector, as are healthcare and compliance-related costs in general. Outlook for the rest of 2026 was guarded but positive. Capital still is available, but the market is becoming more selective. A clear plan is necessary to succeed.Market signals. Leaders desire stronger small-business partnerships, referral systems, and customer experience and less regulatory friction.
