Tacoma- and Seattle-shot teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You is being adapted for Broadway.

The stage version of the classic rom-com was initially announced last year. The official premiere date — Aug. 17, 2027 — was confirmed today.

The Broadway adaptation will feature songs and lyrics by Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Gruska, with Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang writing the musical’s book.

A ’90s riff on Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” the original film starred Julia Stiles as the no-nonsense feminist Kat Stratford. Kat and her sister, Bianca (Larisa Oleyik), live in the Seattle area with their strict father (Larry Miller), who forbids his youngest from dating — unless Kat manages to get a boyfriend first. This proves to be a problem for new kid Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who is smitten with Bianca. He then devises a plan to have the rough-around-the-edges but sweet-underneath-it-all bad boy Patrick Verona, played by the late Heath Ledger, woo Kat into a relationship.

The film was released in 1999 and, though, partially shot in Seattle, was mostly filmed around Tacoma, specifically Stadium High School, which was the stand-in for the fictional Padua High. (No word yet if the stage’s “10 Things” will continue to be based in the Northwest.)

‘The End of Oak Street’ is Entertainingly Derivative

Originally published on 425. Of the two Steven Spielberg movies that’ve come out this year, I enjoyed “The End of Oak Street” more. “Oak Street” was not, I should say, actually directed by the soon-to-be-80-year-old blockbuster titan. That credit goes to David Robert Mitchell, best known for the generationally influential stalker-horror movie “It Follows” (2014). […]
