A community-driven app that tracks Mount Rainier’s visibility is gaining attention.

The Thurston Chronicle reported that Rainier Watch and its crowdsourced platform, Is The Mountain Out?, have experienced a surge in interest after an unexpected social-media post went viral. Rainier Watch operator David Lindahl started reporting mountain visibility during his daily commute in 2013, according to the article.

The project has since grown into a multi-platform community that lets users submit Rainier sightings, which are combined with regional webcam feeds. Reports come from communities throughout Western Washington, including Olympia and Tumwater and nearby areas such as DuPont, Buckley, and Fircrest. The platform categorizes conditions ranging from “Mountain OUT!” to “Mostly Out,” giving users a real-time picture of whether the peak is visible, the article stated.

The recent viral moment began when Lindahl responded to a post on Threads. He said he awoke the next morning to more than 30 orders for Rainier Watch merchandise — a number that quickly grew to more than 100. Online engagement eventually reached about 800,000, The Thurston Chronicle reported.

Lindahl hopes to build on the momentum by expanding the Rainier Watch shop and increasing fundraising for Mount Rainier National Park and regional trail conservation, the article said. A portion of apparel-shop profits is donated to organizations working to protect the park.
