Kenmore destination The Lodge at St. Edward Park is closing for a year to build a new 15-pool spa.
The Seattle Times reported on Friday that the 5-year-old hotel, once a seminary, will lay off in October 86 workers as part of the closure, though its co-owner, developer Kevin Daniels, qualified that he’s hoping when the hotel reopens, employees will be hired back, and that its overall workforce will double.
“Even though it’s hard on our employees,” he told the publication, “we thought we had to bite the bullet.”
The new Nordic-inspired wellness experience is a maneuver to boost business. The Lodge, the Times noted, has faced numerous challenges since its 2021 opening, from the pandemic to rising event costs and dwindling Canadian tourism. (This July and August, though, were the best-performing months in the business’s history.) The spa project will reportedly cost around $40 million; Daniels and his co-owner wife, Mary, originally spent about $57 million to open the hotel.
“It’s a building and a project easy to fall in love with,” Daniels told 425 in 2021 of the property.
