If Mars and the Wild West had a baby, it probably would look a lot like Cathedral Gorge State Park. Located in southeastern Nevada, this is 1,800 acres of otherworldly landscape and one of Nevada’s original parks, although the site itself is much older than the state, by about a few million years.

Let’s start with science: Long ago, explosive volcanic eruptions blanketed this valley in thick layers of ash. Over time, water and wind carved through that soft bentonite clay, sculpting the towering spires, narrow slot canyons and ripple-like ridges you see today.

And now, you get to wander straight through it and explore caves, trails and more.

The park’s “caves” aren’t traditional caves: they’re tight, winding slot canyons you can squeeze through like a real-life maze. Spots like Moon Cave, Cathedral Caves and Canyon Caves are photographers’ (and nature enthusiasts’) paradise to explore, especially when the light filters in from above.

And yes—bring lunch. Cathedral Gorge has been a picnic destination since the 1920s, with stone structures from the Civilian Conservation Corps still standing today. There are ramadas, grills and even camping sites if you want to stay awhile. Learn more at parks.nv.gov/parks/cathedral-gorge.

Know Before You Go:

  • Slot canyons can be narrow and uneven.
  • Temperatures rise quickly, bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.
  • Cell service is limited, so plan ahead.
  • The formations are fragile—stick to marked paths and avoid climbing to help preserve the landscape.
