Where the Buffalo Roam: Inside Utah’s Wild Bison Roundup

Bison aren’t exactly abundant in the Southwest. Roadrunners, rattlesnakes, coyotes, enough lizards to populate a small Jurassic Park? Sure. But herds of enormous, shaggy bison thundering freely across the desert? Not as much.

Unless you head to Utah’s Antelope Island.

Floating in the Great Salt Lake just north of Salt Lake City, Antelope Island State Park is a 42-square-mile high-desert island home to one of the country’s largest and oldest free-roaming bison herds. About 700 bison wander here among the sagebrush, rocky hills and wide-open lake views.

Once a year, however, those bison have an appointment.

On Oct. 24, 2026, the Annual Bison Roundup brings horseback riders together to gather the herd and move the animals toward the park’s corrals. The public can watch the spectacle, and experienced riders can even register to participate. This means, yes, you can technically spend your Saturday helping round up hundreds of bison on horseback.

For spectators who prefer to leave the actual cowboying to others, the Roundup Rendezvous offers prime viewing of the herd’s final push into the corrals, along with food trucks, educational and retail booths and games.

The work continues Oct. 27-29 during the aptly named Working of the Bison. Animals are sorted one at a time for vaccinations and individual health screenings, including pregnancy and parasite checks. The annual process helps wildlife managers monitor the health of the herd and maintain the island’s ecosystem.

Make a Weekend of It

The roundup may be the headliner, but Antelope Island deserves more than a quick drive-by. The park has roughly 50 miles of trails, including Buffalo Point Trail, Lakeside Loop and Dooley Knob Trail, plus scenic roads where bison, pronghorn and other wildlife can make an appearance. Just remember: free-roaming means free-roaming. Admire the fluffy cows from a very respectful distance, as friend shaped does not equal friendly, sadly.

Stick around after sunset. Antelope Island is an International Dark Sky Park, offering remarkably dark skies despite its proximity to Salt Lake City. Free public star parties with the Ogden Astronomical Society are held on select nights, turning a day of Wild West drama into an evening beneath the Milky Way.

Bison by day, stars by night and no time machine required.
