If you’re in Utah late July, you might be wondering if it’s still the Fourth of July. Here, the fireworks are still popping, the parades are still rolling, and the rodeos are still selling out. But they’re celebrating another holiday, Pioneer Day, and the state goes big.
Every July 24, the state celebrates the arrival of the first Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 after a months-long journey west. Over the years, the holiday has grown beyond its historical roots into one of the biggest celebrations of the summer. Many businesses and government offices even close for the day, while communities fill their streets with parades, PRCA rodeos, concerts, carnivals and fireworks. The festivities even spill across state lines into neighboring communities founded by early pioneers, including parts of Arizona and Nevada.

Days of ’47 Celebration | Salt Lake City, Utah
The state’s largest Pioneer Day celebration takes over Salt Lake City with a full week of festivities. The iconic Days of ’47 Parade rolls through downtown on the morning of July 24, while the nationally recognized Days of ’47 Rodeo brings five nights of bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding and family entertainment to the Utah State Fairpark. Add in fireworks, festivals and community events, and it’s the biggest Pioneer Day celebration in the state.

Ogden Pioneer Days | Ogden, Utah
One of Utah’s oldest Pioneer Day traditions, Ogden Pioneer Days has been drawing crowds for generations. The celebration includes one of the state’s largest parades, a PRCA rodeo, concerts, a rodeo run and family activities throughout the week leading up to July 24. Ogden itself is a town with a lot of history to stroll through, including the old Union Station train stop, making for a getaway back in time.

Pioneer Day Celebration | Logan, Utah
Another small town with big celebrations is Logan. The holiday is marked with a community parade, family activities and an evening fireworks show. It’s a classic small-town celebration that captures the welcoming spirit of Pioneer Day.

Snowflake Pioneer Days | Snowflake, Arizona
Founded by Mormon pioneers in 1878, Snowflake keeps the tradition alive with one of Arizona’s biggest Pioneer Day celebrations. Held July 24-25, the event features a parade, pioneer games including a stick pull competition, arts and crafts, historic home tours and live entertainment. But what people travel to this little town for would be the rodeo. Top regional cowboys and cowgirls compete in classic Western events beneath Arizona’s summer skies, keeping the town’s ranching heritage front and center, with a fireworks finale to end the night.

Lund Pioneer Days | Lund, Nevada
Nevada puts its own spin on Pioneer Day in the tiny railroad community of Lund. This beloved small-town celebration features a hometown parade, community barbecue, family activities and the Lund Pioneer Days Rodeo, recognized as Nevada’s oldest amateur rodeo. It’s a classic slice of rural Americana where neighbors gather to celebrate the pioneer spirit with plenty of Western tradition and hospitality.
