11 students injured after car crashes into school bus in Pierce County

Jan 9, 2026, 10:48 AM | Updated: 3:49 pm

Eleven students were injured in a school bus crash in unincorporated Pierce County Friday morning.

Thirty-two Franklin-Pierce School District students were aboard the school bus when a sedan crashed into it at the intersection of 128th Street E. and Waller Road in Pierce County at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Ten kids, reportedly from Collins Elementary, were taken to the hospital. One injury may have been serious, as of this reporting, while the rest suffered minor injuries. The students who were not injured will be released to their parents after an evaluation.

The students ranged from Kindergarten through fifth grade.

“Several personnel from the Franklin peer School District are doing a fantastic job coordinating with parents and getting the kids safely onto another bus,” Pierce County Deputy Carly Cappetto said.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office stated the driver of the sedan was at fault for the crash. The driver was also transported to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is currently unknown. He is expected to undergo a check for impairment.

The bus was heading for Collins Elementary. The crash was cleared by 11 a.m.
