3.0 earthquake reported near Chelan

Dec 29, 2014, 3:56 PM | Updated: 4:31 pm

A 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook in Entiat near Chelan Monday afternoon.

The earthquake, 2.6 miles deep, was recorded at 3:33 p.m. No damage was reported.

Just last month, a crew led by U. S. Geological Survey geologist Brian Sherrod found evidence of the Entiat fault in an old landslide.

Scientists think an 1872 quake with an estimated magnitude of about 7 was centered near Entiat, not far from the Columbia River at the south end of Lake Chelan.

The epicenter of the quake is important because it could affect the design of new structures, like bridges and dams, in the area.

The Wenatchee World reports scientists are waiting for the results of carbon dating and other expert opinions to verify the fault.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
