All lanes reopened nearly 2 hours after a 4-car collision halted all traffic on southbound I-5 during the Friday morning commute through downtown Seattle.
The collision occurred on southbound I-5 near the Spokane Street exit around 10:30 a.m. It blocked all lanes of the freeway turning I-5 into a parking lot for about 30 minutes, until two lanes were opened. Three lanes were opened shortly after that. The Seattle Fire Department told drivers to avoid I-5 as they tended to the incident.
The collision resulted in a 5-mile backup in the southbound lanes, and a 2-mile backup in the northbound lanes.
The fire department reported that one person had to be extricated, and two patients were transported in stable condition to a local hospital. The Washington State Patrol reported that drivers and passengers had minor injuries.
AVOID SB I-5 south of Seattle at Spokane St right now (don’t try to get on SB via Spokane ramp either). All lanes blocked for crash response pic.twitter.com/9mGH9gqjy4
