Amazon considers opening 3,000 cashierless Go stores

Sep 19, 2018, 11:32 PM

Amazon is considering opening 3,000 Amazon Go stores by 2021, according to Bloomberg.

Already, Seattle has three cashierless Amazon Go stores and Chicago welcomed its first Amazon Go store on Monday.

Amazon Go offers ready-to-eat foods and grocery staples. Shoppers download the Amazon Go app and scan a QR code to enter the store. They can then take the items they want and leave without having to stop at a counter to pay; their accounts are automatically charged when they leave.

The checkout counter-free store relies on computer vision, machine learning algorithms and sensors to track what customers are taking off the shelves — or putting back on the shelves — and purchasing.

“People familiar with the matter” told Bloomberg that Amazon is planning for 10 locations by the end of this year. They say another 50 locations are expected in major metro areas in 2019, and then 3,000 stores by 2021.
