Everett City Council approves new AquaSox stadium

The Everett City Council has approved a $200,000 agreement to begin work for a new downtown AquaSox stadium.

The cost of the stadium will be covered by the city’s capital improvement fund, with a $7.4 million state grant reimbursing the city.

The agreement allows for surveying, environmental investigations, and conceptual design work while contract negotiations continue.

Council member votes against AquaSox agreement

Everett City Council member Judy Tuohy voted against the agreement, citing concerns about the lack of clarity on costs and revenues. So far, the city has spent about $1.8 million on the project.

“Personally, I have a hard time with a ‘just keep spending’ approach without the solid answers,” Tuohy said Wednesday. “That’s why I will be voting no tonight. This is not a no forever, this is just a no until we get more information.”

The city has been planning a new stadium since 2021 when MLB’s new requirements for minor league stadiums were announced.

The proposed downtown stadium could cost between $84 million and $114 million, with an additional $18 million for property acquisition. Everett’s contribution is expected to be around $4.5 million.

Bayley Construction will be taking on the project. One of the Mercer Island company’s previous projects includes Husky Ballpark which was built for the University of Washington in 2014.

By March, the city council may vote on a contract with a design-build team, which could cost between $2.5 million and $3.5 million.
