Students and faculty at Arlington High School were evacuated Tuesday morning as officials reported an “emergency situation.”

One 16-year-old student has been arrested in relation to the incident.

According to the city of Arlington and Arlington Public Schools, initial reports that a homemade smoke device was set off in a bathroom at the school were reported around 8:30 a.m. Authorities then responded and put out a small fire in a bathroom on the second floor of the school’s D-wing.

Police and fire departments further searched the school for any additional explosive devices, but none were found.

Initial investigation into the incident discovered that the device in the bathroom was a homemade explosive.

Arlington High School evacuation

Reports Tuesday morning indicated that a smoke bomb was set off in the high school bathroom. Police and fire departments responded to the scene, as well as a bomb squad truck. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted with the investigation.

Students and staff were reported as safe shortly after. The district announced that all Tuesday evening athletic events at the high school would continue as scheduled.

Students who take the bus to school were transported to Haller Middle School after the evacuation. Parents picked up their kids at Haller Middle School as well. Students who regularly walk or drive were allowed to leave campus once attendance was taken.
