Drivers on I-405 through Bellevue experienced an odd traffic jam early Thursday afternoon, after dozens of bales of hay spilled onto the roadway near the Southeast 8th Street exit.

The hay bales had three lanes fully blocked starting around 1:30 p.m. As of 2:30 p.m., traffic was getting by in the two right lanes as crews continued work to finish moving the hay off to the shoulder. Lanes were fully reopened around 3 p.m., after all of the hay was finally removed and cleared away in trucks.

This isn’t the first time Western Washington freeways have experienced a peculiar traffic blockage. In May, a semi-truck collision saw northbound I-5 through Fife coated with milk, blocking lanes for hours.

In 2019, a semi-truck carrying live chickens jackknifed on I-5 through Olympia, sending the surviving chickens running across the roadway.
