Ballard uncorks new ship in a bottle mural behind Mox Boarding House

A new mural has been put up by the Ballard Alliance in partnership with Mox Boarding House as a part of the Ballard Alliance Public Art program that aims to beautify the area’s commercial corridor.

“For more than the past decade, Mox Seattle has been a proud member of the Ballard community,” said Jorel Miller, Director of Mox Boarding House. “We are honored to be a part of this project and excited for this mural as it will welcome individuals to the Ballard neighborhood for years to come.”

The mural was created by Jen Vickers, a mechanical engineer turned graphic designer, and serves as a piece of urban design to make the area more friendly and walkable.

“The ship in a bottle concept marries Ballard’s maritime industry to the food and drink culture of the neighborhood. It symbolizes the complex origination of this popular neighborhood… The most important part of the mural is the land acknowledgment. While the mural serves as a whimsical capsule of Ballard, it’s important to note that European settlers were not the original habitants and that the Coast Salish people and land are honored as part of this piece,” said Vickers.

The mural will beautify the space between Ballard’s historic core and Leary Avenue’s commercial corridor and works to breathe new life into the neighborhood.

“The Ballard Alliance is thrilled to produce a large gateway mural that welcomes Ballardites and visitors to the neighborhood. This mural is the most recent of many public art projects the Alliance has completed, and we believe this mural significantly enhances our urban landscape,” said Devin Reynolds, the Alliance’s Senior Manager of Economic Development & Public Realm.

A part of ten other completed murals and seven colorful utility box wrappings designed by local artists, the Ballard Alliance will continue to fund public art projects around the north Seattle neighborhood.
