Thursday, Nov. 1, is the deadline for big rig drivers to make sure they’re carrying chains when traveling the mountain passes.

Alice Fiman, with the state Department of Transportation, says failure to carry proper tire chains carries a $124 fine. Drivers can expect a $500 fine for not chaining up during winter driving advisories.

“We did have snow last week up in the higher elevations. When traction tires are required for passenger cars, that means chains are required for those heavy trucks.”

That includes some of the larger RVs, trucks and SUVs; any vehicle heavier than 10,000 pounds.
The Washington State Patrol says it will have a special chain-emphasis patrol in early November to make sure drivers are carrying the appropriate number of chains, including spares.

It’s not too soon for all drivers to check their tires, their vehicles, and their trunks for emergency supplies before heading into the mountains.

Studded tires don’t meet the chain requirement and are legal for use only between Nov. 1 and March 31 in Washington.

Fiman recommends talking to your local tire dealer or mechanic if you’re unsure about which chains to buy or whether your tires are in good shape for winter driving.
