Potentially fatal botulism risk prompts SeaBear to recall multiple chowders

The Anacortes-based SeaBear Company is recalling two types of seafood chowder because of botulism risk, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The seafood chowder at risk of containing botulism is its Smoked Salmon Chowder and the Alehouse Clam Chowder. Consumers should not eat either, even if they don’t seem spoiled. The chowder was distributed in Alaska, California, Colorado, and Oregon in addition to Washington through physical retail stores and direct home delivery. The chowder at risk was sold and distributed between Oct. 1 and March 14.
SeaBear initiated the recall after a customer complained about a pouch not being properly sealed, according to KIRO 7. Upon further investigation, the company found a mechanical issue with equipment, which caused the seals to not fully bond and made some pouches leak.
No illnesses have been reported to date.

What is botulism?
Botulism is a rare, but serious, illness caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that attacks the body’s nerves, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, and can cause the following symptoms: General weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension, and constipation. People experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
