Construction crews to take over Alaskan Way for seawall replacement

For the next eight weeks, drivers on Seattle’s Alaskan Way will have to navigate through construction of the new seawall.
From Friday, April 5 until almost Memorial Day weekend, Seattle Department of Transportation crews will be installing electric cables, wiring, and utility poles, and will be paving the roadway between Virginia and Pike streets. Alaskan Way will be reduced to one lane in each direction in work areas.
SDOT says the early construction is necessary to make sure seawall construction this fall is “as efficient as possible” and to make sure the project stays on schedule.
Most of the work will happen from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, but SDOT says there may be times of construction at night or on weekends. It promises to notify neighbors if night work is needed.
“No Park” signage was already placed on Alaskan Way and went into effect April 1.
Major construction is slated to begin in fall of 2013 and take approximately seven years. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn said the first phase must be completed by 2016, in time for the planned removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
Voters approved a $290 million, 30-year bond measure to pay to rebuild the seawall.
