He said he was aiming at a squirrel, but police believe a Whatcom County man was trying to shoot pot into a jail window Tuesday morning.

The sheriff’s office says one of its employees saw a man with a bow shoot an arrow towards a second floor window of the jail around 8:40 a.m. The arrow, with a baggie full of marijuana and another substance, landed on the roof.

The employee copied down the man’s license plate and detectives used it to track him down at a home near Bellingham. The bow was spotted in the car.

Despite search warrants, the suspect refused to let deputies into the home. The sheriff’s office says “forcible entry was effectuated.”

The suspect admitted firing an arrow, but said he was trying to kill a squirrel. He didn’t explain why a bag of pot was attached.

The man was booked into Whatcom County Jail on charges of attempted introduction of contraband and for obstructing officers.

Police say he has a lengthy criminal history.
