Detergent packets look like candy, send kids to the ER

New single-load laundry packets may be convenient, but their colorful, candy-like packaging and new concentrated formulas are a dangerous combination for young children.
According to a new study in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, there are a growing number of kids getting hurt by swallowing laundry or dish detergent. More than 2,200 cases have been reported in the first half of the year, across the country.
In our state, the Washington Poison Center says they are seeing double the number of incidents as they did before the pods were introduced. Medical Director Dr. William Hurley says not only do the pods or packets look appealing to young eyes, they also contain more corrosive ingredients than those used just a couple of decades ago.
Many states and Congress have passed rules to cut down on the amount of phosphates in our water supply. This led detergent companies to limit their use of the chemicals. They found new formulas for cleaning clothes and dishes.
“They shifted to using some solvents. We think those solvents in some cases around the U.S. have led to a significant amount of sedation in children,” says Dr. Hurley.
The Washington Poison Center has joined a national effort to urge Congress and detergent manufacturers to make more secure packaging and perhaps even change the formulas so they are not as dangerous for kids.
Most of the children reported to have swallowed the detergent are between the ages of 18 months and 4 years. There have been 90 incidents called in to the Washington Poison Center in the last four months. Before the pods were introduced, they would typically get just 5 to 10 calls each month.
Some companies have voluntarily started to make changes. In addition to creating more secure packaging, Dr. Hurley says a few manufacturers are getting rid of the bright blue and orange dyes that make the detergent look so attractive to kids.
