‘Domestic violence bill’ blocked from vote in state senate

Apr 18, 2013, 8:30 AM | Updated: 8:38 am

Gun control advocates faced another defeat in the Washington State Legislature as the Republican-run Senate refused to let a bill come to the floor for a vote.

After other gun control measures, like expanding background checks, failed to succeed this session, state Democrats thought they had a chance to pass a bill that would prevent people with protection or restraining orders against them from having guns.

The Senate didn’t allow a vote.

“This is just a dangerous window that we want to close to protect victims,” said Rep. Roger Goodman who sponsored the bill. “Yes it involves firearms, but this is a domestic violence bill.”

Opponents believe the bill is unconstitutional because it takes guns from people who haven’t been convicted of a crime.
