The Edmonds City Council voted Tuesday night 4-3 to stop plans for the Edmonds Street Waterfront Connector, that would given emergency vehicles access to the city’s waterfront.

About 7,000 people signed a petition to stop the connector bridge from Edmonds Street and Sunset Avenue to Brackett’s Landing North.

The reason it’s needed, according to some city officials, is simple.

When the railroad crossing at Main street or at Dayton Street is blocked by a train, emergency vehicles can’t get through.  The connector bridge would allow access.

Opponents say they’re concerned about the size, the views and the environment, while supporters say it’s clearly needed for safety reasons.

The city has been working on the solution since 2016.
