Edmonds officer resigns amidst sex charges

Jan 15, 2013, 4:18 PM | Updated: 4:20 pm

An Edmonds police officer accused of having sex with a woman he’d picked up for jaywalking has now quit.

Daniel Lavely was on patrol last May when he stopped the 28-year-old woman on Highway 99.

She was released, but Snohomish County prosecutors say he contacted her later, and they drove in his patrol car to a remote location where they had sex.

The 48-year-old officer was on paid leave while the Edmonds Police Department conducted an internal investigation. He resigned Tuesday just before he was going to be disciplined, which could’ve included being fired.

He still faces trial in May for a charge of custodial sexual misconduct. Lavely had been with the department for eight years.
