The Tomahawk chop went away 20 years ago, and now the Tomahawk mascot at Marysville Pilchuck High School is going, too.

The story behind the Northwest’s weirdest school mascots

The Marysville School District has been directed to remove the Native American mascots at Marysville Pilchuck High School, and Totem Middle School, home of the Thunderbirds.

The Everett Herald reports leaders of the Tulalip Tribe asked for the changes, under a law the state Legislature passed this year and that takes effect next month.

The district memo, obtained by the Everett Herald, says that the Tribes’ request wants to eliminate “potentially racially derogatory or discriminatory school mascots, logos, or team names in public schools that are contradictory to the schools’ and school district’s mission of providing an equal education to all.”

The schools must phase out the mascots by Dec. 31. The community, including students, will be involved in selecting new mascots.

KIRO Radio’s Chris Sullivan contributed to this report.

Correction, 6/25: A previous version of this article stated that the Marysville School Board had voted to change the two Native American mascots. It has been edited to reflect that the school board has not yet taken direct action, and is currently in the process of gathering community, student, and staff input.
