More than a thousand Boeing 737’s will need special inspections to look for a specific part that could fail prematurely, leading to pilots losing control.

The FAA is ordering inspections for six versions of the 737 to check the condition of pins that are used to connect the horizontal stabilizers to the tail.

The pins are prone to corrosion, and the Wall Street Journal reports improper procedures were used to coat the pins at the factory and that could lead to premature failure.

The pins must be inspected and replaced, if needed.

The directive takes effect in late May, which should give airlines plenty of time to work the inspections into their flight schedules.

No flight delays are expected.
