A wildfire has continued to grow in Douglas County, having now expanded to over 12 square miles as of Monday evening.

Western Washington enters dangerous wildfire territory

The fire was initially estimated to have exceeded one square mile on Sunday afternoon, before growing to two-and-a-half by that same evening. By Monday morning, it had expanded to four square miles.

While there have been no reported injuries, the fire has had roughly 80 homes under various evacuation notices, ranging from Level 1 warnings that residents should be “aware of danger,” to Level 3, which means that there is “immediate danger,” and that residents should leave their homes right away.

A Level 3 notice was put in place from Moses Stool down Rock Island Grade Road to SR 28, as well as the north side of Batterman Road. A Level 2 Evacuation is in place for Indian Camp Road, while the Palisades area is operating under a Level 1 warning.

Responders estimate that the fire remains roughly 10% contained right now, as firefighters work to dig a line around its perimeter and keep it on the west side of the Rock Island Grade. Containment efforts have proven difficult, though, due to “very active fire behavior caused by high temperatures and shifting winds.”

In total, 177 personnel, 36 engines, three crews, six dozers, and two helicopters have been working to get the blaze under control. Assistance from the state arrived to relieve local responders on Monday morning, while the “State Incident Management Team is in place to manage on-going suppression efforts.”
