Gorge promoter promises increased safety, security at Paradiso Festival

Jun 27, 2014, 6:22 AM | Updated: 6:54 am

Promoters of Paradiso, a two-day electronic dance music festival that begins Friday at the Gorge Amphitheater, have promised increased safety and security procedures following the death of a concertgoer last year.

Patrick Witkowski, 21, died of massive organ failure from an overdose of methamphetamines after ingesting what he thought was an ecstasy pill, according to his friends.

Witkowski was among 72 concertgoers who were taken to area hospitals during the festival, which began June 28, 2013, and attracted more than 25,000 attendees. Of those, roughly 50 were treated for alcohol and/or drug intoxication, according to the local fire district.
In an exclusive interview with KIRO Radio in April, Patrick’s parents, Paul and Tracy Witkowski, accused the venue of tolerating drug use.

“They should not be allowed to have that type of environment exist,” Tracy Witkowski said. “As far as I’m concerned, they all have the blood on their hands.”

She expressed concern that Paradiso would be allowed to return this year.

“Now it’s next summer, people have forgotten and it’s time to start this up again,” she said. “They probably hope it doesn’t repeat itself, but they’re going to go on with it like it never happened.”

In response to those concerns, promoters of Paradiso have released a series of online videos about steps that will be taken this year to improve safety and security.

According to promoter USC, this year’s event will include the following safety and security enhancements:

-Emergency doctors on hand 24/7 throughout the festival and in the campground.
-More free water stations. This year there will be 12 high-volume stations.
-A group of volunteers called the “Conscious Crew,” which will roam and take care of others throughout both the festival and campgrounds.
-Main medical station in campgrounds, with multiple substations clearly marked.
-Additional shade tents throughout the festival grounds
-A team of safety officers patrolling the venue, campgrounds, and parking lots around-the-clock.

Promoters also offered the following tips for concertgoers:

-Water equals life. We have free water readily available throughout the venue to replenish your body and keep you hydrated all night long.
-On the dance floor, we’re all best friends. Keep an eye out for our volunteer rovers who’ll lend a hand if needed.
-Our staff, security and medics never judge, so talk to them if you need help or see someone who does.
-Those that get into drug or alcohol trouble at events are often with friends who don’t know what to do.
Washington State law protects you, so get help at the first sign of trouble.
-Take care of each other. If you see someone who could use help, don’t just walk by. Stop and talk.
-Let’s act responsibly. We are a community and we need to set our own boundaries.
-Burning calories requires energy. Your body needs sustenance before the fun begins, so eat a hearty meal! Vendors will be available if you get hungry throughout the night.
-The music doesn’t stop, but you should. Take breaks and pace yourself, dancing is hard work!
-It’s best to plan ahead so you have a safe and easy ride ready at the end of the night. If your plan falls through, our staff can help you make arrangements to get home safely, just ask!
-We care about you when you’re gone. Our culture is all about celebrating life. Keep the vibes positive and we’ll see you next time!
