A Grays Harbor County resident has died from H5N5 avian influenza, the first-ever human case with that strain of bird flu, KIRO 7 reported Friday, citing the Washington State Department of Health (DOH).

Grays Harbor County resident was treated in King County

The patient, an older adult with underlying health conditions, developed a high fever, confusion, and respiratory distress, and was hospitalized in early November. They were receiving treatment in King County after previously being treated in Thurston and Grays Harbor counties, according to the DOH.

Officials are investigating potential sources of exposure, including contact with wild or domestic birds.

Public health experts said there is no identified risk to the general public, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the overall threat from avian influenza to be low. Human infections are uncommon and typically mild, often linked to direct contact with sick animals.

Health officials urge precautions with birds, livestock

Health officials urge people who work with birds or livestock to take precautions, including wearing protective gear. Those with backyard poultry should avoid contact with sick or dead birds and report illnesses to the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Sick or dead wildlife should be reported to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
