The grenade found next to a SeaTac elementary school did not contain any explosives, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

A construction worker found a grenade in a box on the side of the road in SeaTac at around 8 a.m., at the intersection of South 168th Street and 37 Avenue South. Bomb units from the King County Sheriff’s Office and FBI retrieved the grenade, x-rayed it and later found the device was not real.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that after analyzing the x-rays, it could not be determine if the device contained explosives. The device was moved to a remote location and detonated. KIRO TV reproted the grenade was to be detonated at the McMicken Heights Elementary School playground.

After detonation it was determined the device did not contain explosives and appeared to be an old cast iron grenade that may have been a training device.

A King County Sheriff’s Office bomb technician said even though the device did not contain explosives it is still a crime to “place a hoax device.”

An investigation will be conducted to determine who placed the device at the scene.
