A female harbor seal was rescued on Thursday after it was shot in the face in Hood Canal. The seal was “extremely emaciated” and had bloody discharge.

The Center Valley Animal Rescue’s (CVAR) wildlife rehabilitator was able to grab a life vest and net before quickly responding to assist, the center announced.

The harbor seal was noticeably underweight, had a nasal infection, and an injured eye.

Harbor seal’s survival likelihood may take days to determine

While working alongside the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, the seal was safely captured. CVAR interns then transported the seal to Sealife Response, Rehabilitation, and Research (SR3) for specialized care.

When the harbor seal arrived at SR3, she was given an X-ray, which revealed that she had been shot in the face. CVAR noted that it may take a few more days to determine the likelihood of survival.

“We are monitoring her condition closely, preparing for further medical diagnostics, and will determine her likelihood of recovery in the coming days,” SR3 stated.
